Day 1: Pick up, city tour and head to Volcanoes National Park
On this day, our driver-guide will happily welcome you for the unforgettable safari adventure to the jungle of Volcanoes National Park in the quest for the mountain gorillas. He will brief you about the trip before having a simple city tour to see the magnificent modern buildings of the cleanest city in East Africa, exchange the currency, visit local markets where you will buy some of the items you don’t have, and then proceed to the genocide memorial grounds to listen to the story of the innocent people who were killed in the 1994 genocide incident.
When the tour is done, have lunch before embarking on a 2-3-hour scenic drive with the rolling hills, evergreen vegetation and scattered homesteads in front of you as you approach Volcanoes National Park where you will have dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Morning gorilla trekking and visit the twin lakes
After the last drop of coffee in your cup, pack your hiking pieces of equipment and drive to Volcanoes national park headquarters (Musanze – Kinigi), where you will join other colleagues on a briefing session by expert park rangers who will tell you the dos and don’ts while with the creatures in the tropical rain forest.
Thereafter, he will assign you to a particular Gorilla family of your interest and with the behaviors you love most. Gorilla tracking time primarily depends on the location of these gentle apes and your speed, yet the rewards of tracking are limitless because of the different birds, primates, and plant species you will encounter along the way.
One hour with the creatures will be the reward for your hard work and determination upon finding them eating, playing or resting beneath the giant shed of the tree species.
After the trekking session, enjoy a mouth-watering lunch before going to relax by the shores of the twin lakes in the evening, viewing the hills and islands overlooking the lake. After 2-4 hour hours, drive back to the lodge for refreshment, dinner and overnight.
Day 3: 2nd gorilla trekking experience and cultural encounter
After breakfast, you will return to the park headquarters for yet another unforgettable chance of watching the gentle giants, the mountain gorillas in the jungle of Volcanoes national park. But this time after the briefing is done, the park rangers will allocate you to another unique Gorilla family, with equally interesting characteristics and behaviors.
The tracking session that can last for approximately 1-5 hours gives you a perfect opportunity of taking photos and watching the giant silverbacks pose with the entire troop, as the mothers nurse their young ones, while the other members of the troop play and feed.
After the tracking session, return to the lodge for lunch, before driving to the nearby Ibyiwachu cultural village for an exciting thrilling performance by the locals who sing, dance and tell you some of the stories that will never stop ringing in your minds.
