Nyakamwe Gorilla Family

Nyakamwe is one of the gorilla families that can be trekked in Virunga National Park-Democratic Republic of Congo. Virunga national park is one of a few destinations in Africa where you can locate the endangered mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas are believed to live in mountainous areas at an altitude of 2000 to 4000m above sea level and that’s where their name originates. The mountain gorillas occupy the Virunga Mountains that span across three countries – Uganda Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Nyakamwe gorilla family originates from the Rugendo gorilla family that was headed by Rugendo the father of Humba and Nyakamwe. These two brothers had a misunderstanding with the father and broke away to form their group with 9 members way back in 1998. The two brothers formed Humba gorilla family led by Humba, an elder brother with an agreement to transfer powers of leadership to the Nyakamwe after some time.

Humba group later increased to 16 members and Nyakamwe got tired to be under the pressure of Humba, his elder brother. He again refused to hand over power as agreed and a fight erupted between the two brothers but Nyakamwe won and left his brother, forming his own family called Nyakamwe gorilla family.

In the year 2014, Nyakamwe gorilla family was formed with 10 individuals and left Humba gorilla family with only 5 members. Nyakamwe gorilla family lives in the Bukima sector in central Virunga national park. The park is home to wide variety of biodiversity such as primates, bird species, tree species and mammals among others that live together with these gorillas.
