3 Days gorilla trekking is an excursion to the southwestern part of Uganda in Kisoro district to Mgahinga National Park; it is one of the smallest parks in Uganda but a call on place to visit in Uganda. Mgahinga National Park is the only park in Uganda where Mountain gorillas co-exist with Golden Monkeys thus its slogan “gold meets silver. There is one habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga National Park called Nyakagezi with 9 members.

The Park is near Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda in the south and Virunga National Park of Democratic Republic of Congo in the west and these three parks form the Virunga conservation area. Mgahinga National Park is also a habitat of the big game including; leopards, bush pigs, forest buffalos and forest elephants. The park is majestic when it comes to birdlife with 115 recorded bird species.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Mgahinga National Park Via Equator.

After a morning breakfast, our local guide will pick you up to start off the journey to the southwestern part of Uganda to one of the smallest parks in Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

It is 500 kilometers, approximately 9 hours’ drive from Kampala – the capital city of Uganda to Mgahinga National Park. While heading to the park, you will have a stopover at the equator in Kayabwe along Masaka road for a cup of coffee and memorable photographs while standing in two different hemispheres at the same time, that is south and the north hemispheres. You will proceed straight to the park, check in and relax, dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking

This day of the tour covers the main activity which is gorilla trekking, which starts shortly after an early morning breakfast. Set off to the park headquarters for a briefing by the park rangers on the do’s and don’ts during gorilla trekking. With your parked lunch, drinking water, trekking boots and the walking sticks provided by the ranger set off to trek the habituated Nyakagezi gorilla group.

The time taken hiking this gorilla group is unpredictable it can be minutes, several hours or even the whole day depending on the location and movements of this group. Gorilla trekking is a physical activity where you might get tired but very amazing when you set your eyes onto the 9 members of the calm Nyakagezi gorilla group which includes 4 silver backs, 1 black back, 2 female adults and 2 juveniles.

After finding this gorilla group, you will be authorized to spend one hour around them. After successful trekking, you will go back to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Alternatively, you can take an evening Batwa cultural trail where you join a local Twa guide to walk you through the neighboring Batwa village, to learn about the lives of these remote, amazing people, how they dance, their traditional dances, history, etc.

Day 3: Transfer Back to Kampala

After an early morning breakfast, embark on the journey back to Kampala, while driving through the refreshing plain grass of the western Uganda and looking out for the beautiful hills for photography. Proceed to Kampala for a flight back home.
